But that is what Lara does, and she’s just getting started. The narrative motor of that genre, according to snobs and skeptics, consists of one damn thing after another, but you could say the same of Homer’s Odyssey, and, if memory serves, I don’t believe Odysseus ever clung to the rusty wing of a crashed bomber as it perched athwart a raging waterfall. These are a reminder that “Tomb Raider” began life as a video game. He bequeathed a boxful of maps, puzzles, codes, and clues, more than enough to point Lara in the right direction: “Cross the chasm of souls,” “Face the army of a thousand handmaidens,” and other household tips. Getting to Himiko is no easy task, but Lara is treading in the footsteps of her father, Richard Croft (Dominic West), who embarked on a similar search seven years ago and has not been seen since. There, somewhere, is the final resting place of Himiko, “the first queen of Japan,” who, if disturbed, will unleash terrors so immeasurable that they could leave the world in direst need of a sequel. The plot is equally international, racing along as if on a zip line from London to Hong Kong, and thence to a barely reachable island in the Devil’s Sea. To sum up: we now have a Swedish actress playing an English heroine under the guidance of a Norwegian director. Jolie has retired from the fray of the franchise, and, in Uthaug’s movie, her place is taken by Alicia Vikander. They starred Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the action woman with the kick of an intemperate mule, who mixes the dusty passions of an archeologist with a splash of blue British blood. There have already been two big “Tomb Raider” films, in 20. No, you want the new “Tomb Raider,” where nobody sits around at all. If your name is Roar Uthaug, and you want to make movies, and you’re too late for the live-action reboot of “The Lion King,” what kind of movie should you choose? Not the kind, obviously, where people sit around sipping flat whites and talking about how they really feel.

Vita received more than its fair share of anime games with many of the more popular ones such as Dragon Ball Z and One Piece receiving physical releases in the west (even more niche ones like Asterisk War and Gundam got them in Asia). It’s a personal list (and I’ve given a larger priority to those games with big file sizes) so just as I might be disappointed that Ice Cream Surfer got a physical where Attractio didn’t, so too might people find my selection unworthy – but that just serves to highlight what a great library Vita has that’s worthy of preservation! It’s these that I intend to examine in this article – games that should have gotten a physical release, but didn’t. Unfortunately, for every gem these companies managed to put out, they’ve also handled some stinkers (the recent Pachi Pachi on a Roll being a fantastic example but plenty of others exist such as Drive Girls, Mutant Mudds and Tokyo Tattoo Girls), which often makes me yearn for the titles that fell through the cracks. Thanks to the fantastic efforts of companies like eastasiasoft and Limited Run Games, many Vita games which would otherwise have been digital-only got physical releases, plus a handful of niche publishers like Aksys and NISA also released small print runs of their titles. While this doesn’t look to be a reality any time soon for Vita, the fact that Sony blocked access to already-bought PlayStation Mobile titles does not paint a promising picture. Fast forward 17 years to the launch of the PlayStation Vita and suddenly digital gaming is on the rise, a cheaper and easier way to distribute titles which, combined with the handheld’s poor market presence (except in Japan, where you can find stores filled to the brim with Vita cartridges) meant that many games were only available digitally.įor many gamers like me, this was disappointing as there’s something enjoyable about holding a copy in your hand, plus it means they’re future-proofed in the same way my PS1 titles are – many digital games can be pulled from the store without notice and in the case of things like the infamous P.T., are gone forever unless they’re backed up to your hard-drive. My first ever console was the original PlayStation and back then, digital distribution wasn’t a thing – I had a shelf full of games in their jewel cases that are there to this day and all of them are still playable on the original console (touch wood none of them suffer from disc rot). Avoid clicking on random links or downloading attachments from emails that you weren’t expecting or didn’t ask for.Don’t open it unless you know it’s safe, and even then, be cautious. Treat every unsolicited email with suspicion. It’s like playing a game of “Got You” with a stranger – you don’t even realize what’s happening until it’s too late. They might pretend to be someone you know, like your bank or your boss, or they might use other social engineering tactics to trick you into revealing confidential information to them. Scammers use a variety of tricks to try and get you to hand over your personal information. In other words, a scammer needs more information about the PayPal account they intend to hack into, even after getting the primary email that is linked to the PayPal account. On top of that, PayPal uses state-of-the-art security and cutting-edge web-server technology to detect and prevent fraud, has dedicated teams of review agents, and PayPal itself has never been hacked.Įven if someone does gain access to your account, we offer 100% protection against unauthorized transactions.” PayPal monitors access and attempted access to your accounts closely, so if anything does seem unusual, they’ll let you know. If someone knows the email address you use to log into your PayPal account, you’re still secure unless you’ve provided them with other sensitive personal information, such as your financial information, password, or security questions. While scammers can use your email address as a backdoor to hack into your PayPal account, it doesn’t mean that they can gain unauthorized access to your PayPal account just by getting a hold of your email address. This common emitter amplifier configuration using an NPN transistor has many applications but is commonly used in audio circuits such as pre-amplifier and power amplifier stages. Without this “Bias Voltage” only one half of the input waveform would be amplified. The result is that the transistor is always operating halfway between its cut-off and saturation regions, thereby allowing the transistor amplifier to accurately reproduce the positive and negative halves of any AC input signal superimposed upon this DC biasing voltage. A “Class A Amplifier” operation is one where the transistors Base terminal is biased in such a way as to forward bias the Base-emitter junction. One such Common Emitter Amplifier configuration of an NPN transistor is called a Class A Amplifier. If a suitable DC “biasing” voltage is firstly applied to the transistors Base terminal thus allowing it to always operate within its linear active region, an inverting amplifier circuit called a single stage common emitter amplifier is produced. The Common Emitter Configuration.Īs well as being used as a semiconductor switch to turn load currents “ON” or “OFF” by controlling the Base signal to the transistor in either its saturation or cut-off regions, Bipolar NPN Transistors can also be used in its active region to produce a circuit which will amplify any small AC signal applied to its Base terminal with the Emitter grounded. Note that Beta has no units as it is a ratio.Īlso, the current gain of the transistor from the Collector terminal to the Emitter terminal, Ic/Ie, is called Alpha, ( α ), and is a function of the transistor itself (electrons diffusing across the junction). The value of β can be large up to 200 for standard transistors, and it is this large ratio between Ic and Ib that makes the bipolar NPN transistor a useful amplifying device when used in its active region as Ib provides the input and Ic provides the output. The current in a bipolar NPN transistor is the ratio of these two currents ( Ic/Ib ), called the DC Current Gain of the device and is given the symbol of hfe or nowadays Beta, ( β ). However, this only happens when a small biasing current ( Ib ) is flowing into the base terminal of the transistor at the same time thus allowing the Base to act as a sort of current control input. Then we can see that the transistor is a current operated device (Beta model) and that a large current ( Ic ) flows freely through the device between the collector and the emitter terminals when the transistor is switched “fully-ON”. This link between the input and output circuits is the main feature of transistor action because the transistors amplifying properties come from the consequent control which the Base exerts upon the Collector to Emitter current. So in a NPN Transistor it is the movement of negative current carriers (electrons) through the Base region that constitutes transistor action, since these mobile electrons provide the link between the Collector and Emitter circuits. The Base supply voltage V B is connected to the Base resistor R B, which again is used to limit the maximum Base current. The Collector is connected to the supply voltage V CC via the load resistor, RL which also acts to limit the maximum current flowing through the device. In practice, however, one way is much shorter (which one and why?).Then the voltage sources are connected to an NPN transistor as shown. In principle, the two ways are equivalent: you assume a condition, saturation or active region, and then you check for which values of \$\beta\$ the condition holds. According to what I wrote in the first two paragraphs, what's the meaning of this ratio, then? Recall also that the relationship \$I_\mathrm\$ under the assumption of point 1 and find their ratio. Recall that a BJT is saturated when both the base-emitter (BE) and the base-collector (BC) junctions are forward-biased (and not when "current flows freely from the collector to the emitter", which is a meaningless definition). You might notice that the dual sensors can get triggered by bugs flying into the camera lenses, but otherwise, it’s nice to have dual heat and motion sensors in one. Dual Sensorsĭual motion and heat sensors add a little pizzazz to Night Owl’s motion detection. The company claims that you can see up to 100 feet at night with select cameras. You can watch footage of the darkest corner of your yard, and you should be able to see up to 40 feet out without a problem. Night Owl security cameras shoot in full color during the day and switch to night mode effortlessly. Some devices use micro SD for storage, which can be changed out as you wish. Since local storage is the way to go with Night Owl these days, you can simply use the 1 TB hard drive in the NVR to store your recordings. Voice control is a nice feature it would be nice if Night Owl also worked with Amazon Alexa and other automation platforms like IFTTT, though. And thankfully, Night Owl’s compatibility with Google Assistant allows you to see what the cameras are seeing on pretty much any screen. Google Assistant is designed to make your life easier. It’s always important to have a good two-way talk feature. For instance, you can give a delivery driver instructions on where to leave your packages, and even tell a would-be burglar to scram. Night Owl cameras can capture audio, but you can also use certain models as an intercom of sorts. Also, the DVR’s 1080p HD video was clear enough to make out details when angled just right. The NVR can deliver 4K Ultra HD playback, but be warned, it’s a lot more expensive. I prefer Night Owl’s DVR over their NVR since you can still access remote live viewing when you plug in the Ethernet cable. Overview of Night Owl’s Features and Tech DVR and NVR While the cameras aren’t as easy to install as Blink’s wire-free cameras, in my experience, it was easy enough. If you’re intimidated by DIY projects, you’ll like Night Owl. It’s also worth mentioning that hiding wires on the wired cams was the most time-consuming part. Thankfully, each side is labeled with its appropriate home: “to camera” or “to DVR or NVR.” I recommend connecting the cameras and making sure there’s a signal before mounting them. Once the DVR is connected, you’ll then connect the BNC cables. The wired options were only slightly more complicated, but watching Night Owl’s setup video helped. If you don’t hear the camera say it’s in pairing mode when you plug it in, just press the reset button until it says “resetting.” And adding the camera to your NVR is no sweat its built-in Wi-Fi quickly found the new camera and added it to an empty channel since everything runs over Wi-Fi. All I had to do was plug in the power adapter to hear that the camera was in pairing mode. Learn about more devices out there with hassle-free installation in our roundup of the best wireless cameras.Īs far as setup goes, Night Owl wireless security cameras are simple, but you’ll want to follow their quick online setup guide just to be sure. The most popular ukulele tuning is known as gCEA. Each of the four letters of the tuning name denote the corresponding string on the ukulele, starting from the bottom (the string closest to your chest). Tunings denote this with a lower case letter, as in the standard tuning, gCEA. On the uke, the botttom-most string is typically tuned to a note that is higher than the note on the 2nd bottom-most string. It is recommended to use these tunings, but other tunings can be useful for more experimental work. While the ukulele can be tuned to a wide range of notes, there are a handful of commonly used tunings that are recommended for playing popular music. As long as you are on a device with a microphone (like a phone, tablet, or laptop), you can use our microphone-based tuner above. You will be able to see visually whether the note is either too flat or too sharp, which you can use to adjust the tension of the ukulele string. You can play each string on the ukulele directly into a microphone, which can provide real-time feedback as you play. The simplest method for tuning a ukulele is to use a microphone-based tuner. Below, we'll go through more details of the common ukulele tunings. This is particularly important when playing with other musicians, in order to create harmonies and avoid discordant sounds. Each time you play your ukulele, it is very important to ensure that the instrument is in tune. String instruments like the ukulele have tuning pegs, which can be turned in both directions to either raise or lower the pitch that corresponds to one of the ukulele strings. This process is called tuning, in which the instrument is carefully tuned to specific pitches. All instruments need to be set to exact pitches in order to play music in modern scales.
